CONGRESO REGIONAL DE EMPRENDIMIENTO CIENTÍFICO Y TECNOLÓGICO

La Secretaría General del CSUCA, juntamente con otras instituciones regionales e internacionales, está organizando un CONGRESO DE EMPRENDIMIENTO CIENTÍFICO Y TECNOLÓGICO, que se llevará a cabo en la ciudad de Guatemala del 15 al 19 de junio del año en curso, cuyo objetivo principal es promover la transferencia de los resultados de investigación a la sociedad y su aplicación en campos específicos. Este congreso está orientado a investigadores e inventores interesados en el tema de la propiedad intelectual, particularmente aquellos que estén próximos a patentar o que hayan patentado alguna innovación reciente en cualquier campo del conocimiento. En virtud del alto nivel científico de esta actividad académica, los delegados que llenen el perfil de asistencia deben ser financiados por cada universidad en cuanto a transporte, alojamiento y alimentación durante los días que dure la actividad.

Metas y Objetivos

El objetivo de este congreso es introducir a científicos e ingenieros en el proceso de innovación, generación y protección de la propiedad intelectual, transferencia tecnológica y aplicación de la investigación en la sociedad vía el patentamiento y/o licenciamiento de un producto o servicio..

Participación

La asistencia está abierta para científicos, ingenieros, emprendedores e inversionistas de los países de Centroamérica y República Dominicana y del resto del mundo. En virtud que el congreso será llevado a cabo en inglés, los participantes deben tener un dominio adecuado en las habilidades lingüísticas de dicho idioma, aunque se proveerá servicios de interpretación simultánea inglés-español durante el mismo.

Como regla general, los gastos de alojamiento, alimentación y transporte de los participantes  deben ser cubiertos por la institución interesada en enviar a su delegado. Debe realizarse todo esfuerzo por el/la candidata/a para asegurarse los mismos. Sin embargo, hay fondos limitados disponibles para aquellos participantes que son ciudadanos de un país en vías de desarrollo y que no sean mayores de 45 años. Dicha subvención está disponible únicamente para aquellos que asistan a todas las actividades durante el congreso.

El derecho de participación tiene el costo de: a) investigador universidad miembro del Consejo Superior Universitario Centroamericano –CSUCA-: participación libre;  b) investigador guatemalteco de universidad privada centroamericana excepto Universidad del Valle de Guatemala: Q300.00; c) investigador centroamericano o dominicano de universidad pública o privada: US$100.00; d) investigador universidad de otras regiones del mundo: US$200.00.

 Dr. Joseph Niemela (ITALIA), ICTP.

Head, Applied Physics and Office of External Activities at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics

            Niemela is a Senior Research Scientist at ICTP, which he joined in 2003, and is currently head of its Applied Physics Group. In addition to conducting re­search in areas of fluid turbulence and low temperature physics, he coordinates a number of research and training programs with external partners, including the Central European Initiative’s Science and Technology Network, the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). He is a member of the teaching faculty of the University of Trieste Doctoral School in Environmental and Industrial Fluid Mechanics and besides teaching he serves on its Entrance Examination committee.

Dr. Niemela also serves as a board editor for Papers in Physics and the African Review of Physics. He is a member of the European Physical Society’s Physics for Development Board, and represents the ICTP on the International Commission for Optics’ Education Committee.  Dr. Niemela is currently Director of the UNESCO’s Active Learning in Optics and Photonics Program--an undergraduate level teacher training program-- and also serves as the ICTP liaison to UNESCO’s Division of Basic and Engineering Scienc­es. In addition, he represents ICTP at the SESAME Council and is a member of the SESAME Training and Advisory Committee (TrAC).

Thomas Forest Farb (EUA), Boston, Massachusetts.

Thomas Forest Farb has three decades of experience as an entrepreneur, investor, senior executive and mentor in early-stage information technology and life science companies in Massachusetts, California, Florida, Puerto Rico and China.

·       As an entrepreneur, Mr. Farb has been directly involved in founding and in raising more than $135 million of angel and venture capital for over ten companies.

·       As an investor, he has been a partner in two venture capital/private equity firms in Boston and China and as Executive Director of the Trust for Science & Technology in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

 

·       As a senior executive, he has serve as President, COO or CFO of numerous companies, including Atherio Information Systems, Indevus Pharmaceuticals, MedicaMetrix and Cytyc.

·       As a mentor, he has been a Mentor for the Founder Institute and a Senior Advisor at the Microsoft Innovation Center, both in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Mr. Farb is currently Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of an early stage company in the Boston area, Thrive Bioscience, Inc., which is building instruments to automate laboratory and therapeutic cell culture and has just raised more than $3 million in angel financing.

Mr. Farb has been a member of the Board of Directors of numerous companies including several public companies -- Fair Isaac (NYSE: FIC), Redwood Trust (NYSE: RT), HNC Software (NASD: HNCS), Retek Systems (NASD: RETK), and Symon Communications (NASD: MGN).

 

He has been a Trustee or Advisor for numerous non-profit organizations including the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Asia America Chamber of Commerce, Partners Healthcare, three private schools and two museums. He is also a Founder and Officer of Brahman Industries, a mission driven company developing floating shelters for use in natural disaster.

Dr. Alistair Brett (EUA), Technology Commercialization Advisor to T2 Venture Capital. 

Dr. Alistair has over 25 years of international consulting experience in USA, UK, Russian Federation, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Latvia, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Costa Rica. Alistair specializes in helping countries commercialize science and technology from universities and research institutes and developing support mechanisms for technology commercialization.

Since 2002 Alistair has been a science, technology, innovation consultant to the World Bank Group where he has advised on and assessed technology development and commercialization strategies – with a focus always on practical implementation. He has developed policy recommendations and implementation plans for funding of technology development, foreign patenting strategies, conducting technology audits, creating regional technology transfer centers, incubators and science and technology parks, working with foreign companies, creating educational programs, improving university-industry relations, and business project planning and management. Alistair was previously a senior consultant to Oxford Innovation Ltd, UK, and was Director of the Technology Transfer program at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (USA). He also served on the Advisory Board of the (US) Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer for several years.

Dr Dipali Bhatt-Chauhan, International Relations Manager, the Institute of Physics (IOP)

Dipali is currently responsible for a wide range of IOP’s international activities, with particular experience in enhancing educational opportunities in Africa. She manages IOP’s school Programme, IOP for Africa, nine IOP Resource and Teacher Training Centers in sub-Saharan Africa, promoting hands-on practical physics in the classroom by providing low-cost equipment and training for teachers in Africa.

Alongside her educational work, Dipali designs and organises training programme for scientists and engineers from developing countries on ‘Entrepreneurial Skills’. The Entrepreneurship Workshops are designed to introduce key concepts to scientists and engineers, from technology transfer to the commercialisation of research and the generation and protection of intellectual property. Dipali has successfully delivered 17 workshops in developing countries around the world in partnership with other

She also manages the Institute’s relations with other physics-related learned societies internationally.

She did her PhD in Molecular Electronics from The University of Sheffield, UK, following which she gained professional experience working in both the semiconductor industry and academia in Scotland.  She is a member of International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP): Commission C13 Physics for Development and Member of European Physical Society (EPS) - Interdivisional Group of Physics for Development (IGPD).

Dr. Surya Raghu (EUA), founder-president of Advanced Fluidics, LLC

He has been a co-director and speaker in workshops on Entrepreneurship for Scientists and Engineers in Argentina, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines and South Africa, and as member of missions/speaker to Morocco, Pakistan and Tanzania on Entrepreneurship, Tech Transfer and Research Commercialization topics. He also developed an Entrepreneurship Course Module that has been implemented in several universities in developing countries for training university students in the basics of entrepreneurship.

He is the founder-president of Advanced Fluidics, LLC and co-founder of ET Cube International. He received his Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from Yale University in 1987 and is the founder-president of Advanced Fluidics LLC since 2001 and founding-partner of ET Cube International, Inc. since 2013. His earlier affiliations were with Yale University, Technical University of Berlin, SUNY Stony Brook, and Bowles Fluidics Corporation. He has also been a visiting scientist at NIST and AFOSR Laboratories and a guest lecturer at Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan.

Dr. Raghu has inventions related to aerospace, automotive, consumer and biotechnology applications and has been awarded 12 US patents and has over 10 pending patents/invention disclosures as an inventor or co-inventor.  He has experience in the development of products from inventions related to physiological monitoring, DNA testing, wireless corrosion sensors, aerodynamic flow control and spray technology and has active research collaborations with many institutions in the US and Europe. Dr. Raghu is a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship from Germany and an Associate Fellow of the AIAA. He has served as an invited member of the Special Emphasis Review Panels on Micro and Nanotechnology at the National Institutes of Health and as an expert for the evaluation of open grant competition by the Russian Federation.

Yumiko Hamano (FRANCIA), IP and Business Consultant,  ET Cube International

 

Ms. Yumiko Hamano, a national of Japan, has extensive experience in the field of intellectual property (IP) in particular, patents, Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) System, university intellectual property management, university intellectual property policies, technology transfer, technology commercialization, entrepreneurship and technology based business strategies.

Until April 2013, she had worked as senior official for over 27 years at World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva based United Nations’ specialized agency, responsible for the promotion of intellectual property systems and protection of intellectual property rights worldwide.

Together with two other partners, she has now founded a consulting and training company “ET Cube International” providing training and consulting services on intellectual property policies, intellectual property management, technology transfer, intellectual property commercialization and technology based entrepreneurship in collaboration with various international organizations including government institutions.  She is a frequent speaker and lecturer in international conferences and professional training.

 

In addition to her technical expertise she has solid diplomatic skills built over her long experience in working in the United Nations Organization and organizing more than 150 international conferences and workshops through negotiation and coordination with governments and inter-governmental organizations, in particular, major and middle size Intellectual Property Offices and Ministries in charge of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
